California Ranked as The Fourth Most Bicycle-friendly State
According to the California Bicycle Coalition, California is ranked as the fourth most bicycle-friendly state by the League of American Bicyclists 2022 Report. However, bicycle accidents still happen all too frequently. To prevent injuries, here are some California laws all bikers should know:
May is National Bike Month
In celebration of National Bike Month, we’d like to remind all bicyclists, and those whose share the road, to remain vigilant in your personal safety. In recent years, Orange County has seen an increase in the number of fatal and injury accidents involving cyclists. With nothing but a helmet protecting riders from other motorists on the road, the likelihood of a bicyclist suffering a serious injury in a collision is significant. If this happens to you or someone you know, our experienced attorneys are here to help.

E-bike Accidents and Safety Reminders
E-bike accidents continue to rise in all cities throughout Orange County, according to current hospital records. Excessive speed and unsafe riding are the primary causes of these accidents. Minors are riding e-bikes without knowing the rules of the road. Here are some basic reminders to keep you safe:
🚲 Ride your e-bike in the same direction as traffic
🚲 Wear a helmet
🚲 Passengers must be in a designated seat, do not share seats
🚲 Watch your speed, e-bikes go much faster than regular bikes and can cause significant injuries

2022 Was One of the Deadliest Years in Two Decades in Terms of Traffic Fatalities.
2022 was one of the deadliest years in two decades in terms of traffic fatalities. 300+ people were killed in auto accidents in Los Angeles alone.
Most of the fatalities were pedestrians and bicyclists. Distractedness was listed as the number one reason for pedestrian accidents.
This year, experts expect these numbers to increase due to California’s new Freedom to Walk Act, which allows pedestrians to legally jaywalk “with caution.”
Please always remain alert and exercise caution when on the road.

Avoid Social Media Posting During A Claim
At Allen Flatt Ballidis & Leslie, a personal injury law firm in Newport Beach, CA, we recently represented a client who was injured in a motor vehicle accident and sustained an injury to his back. Our client was an avid cyclist, who regularly enjoyed hiking and other outdoor activities, but he was unable to work for an extended period and had many months of medical care. Unfortunately, he did not make a full recovery from his back injury, and he claimed he was unable to participate in previous and normal outdoor activities.
This client’s case did not settle outside the courts, so our experienced attorneys filed a lawsuit against the adverse party. During litigation the defense counsel, on behalf of the insurance company, did a thorough investigation of our client.
