The year 2022 was one of the deadliest years in two decades in terms of traffic fatalities, with over 300 people killed in auto accidents in Los Angeles and another 375 pedestrians killed by vehicles in Orange County. according to the OC Register. Pedestrians and bicyclists were the most vulnerable, with the majority of the fatalities being in these categories. Considering the number one reason for pedestrian accidents was cited as “distracted driving,” it is clear that something needs to be done to reduce this high volume of driving fatalities.

One potential cause for concern is the new Freedom to Walk Act in California, that allows pedestrians to legally jaywalk “with caution.” While the intent behind this law may have been to give pedestrians more freedom, experts fear this new legislation could lead to more accidents on the roads.

As a society, we must take responsibility for our own safety when walking or cycling on the roads. It is important to be aware of our surroundings at all times and exercise caution when crossing roads or cycling on the roads.  We all need to avoid distractions like using phones while driving, engaging today’s technology used in automobiles, and other factors that can take our attention away from the road and put us and others in danger.

One way we can help prevent accidents on the roads is to make sure we are visible to other drivers. This can be achieved by wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially at night. Cyclists should always make sure their bikes have working lights and reflectors, so they can be seen by drivers.

As pedestrians, we should always use crosswalks and obey traffic signals. Even if we have the right of way, it’s important to make sure drivers can clearly see us, and that they are stopping before we cross as a pedestrian.  When cycling, we need to follow traffic laws and stay in designated bike lanes or far to the right side of the road.

It is also essential to be aware of other road users, such as other pedestrians and cyclists. We need to give them plenty of space and avoid overtaking them too closely. Being respectful and courteous to others on the road can go a long way in preventing accidents and keeping everyone safe.

If you or someone you know is hit by a car as a pedestrian or cyclist, it’s important to seek legal assistance.
